Another tale of the Beltinovites

The halls of Galliv curled and spun on geometry sacred and obscene.  Miles of stone once marvelled, ruined and now still yet unrebuilt.  When the Beltinovites would wield empire this was it's seat; now more a prison.  In years of their reign the Beltinovites made slaves of Aron Ve'ja and Cazz'it alike.  They were the slaves that built these hall on who's back rule was weighed.  This has long been overturned, Beltinovites now hold up safely in Galliv; seldom journeying beyond sight of the city.  Here is safety and of course the great library.

Books were the heart Beltinovites bled from.  The library was central and most safe of all Galliv keep.  Stacks swept circles that helix'd in depth and height.  Everywhere lounged the wise drunk in learning, much as sloth.  Though one was hurried and worried amid these trappings of the learned.  Cobius Baco Gervis waded behind a cart collecting discarded tomes and tending to waning lights.  Cobius tender and keeper of books was high among these many readers.  His eyes were not met and sounds duly ignored.  It was strange when he was called down from stacks, worse still the harker only a minor adept magus.

Cobius eyes envenomed with scorn found the magus, though lightened at his sight.  The Beltinovites' eyes were wide in terror an skin convulsed still white.  "A man, no a thing, call upon us. Its questions would be for you, I have no knowledge of what it speaks."  Curious enough Cobius followed somewhat weary of intrusion and change.

Pushing aside the maroon drape Cobius Baco Gervis small steps drew him into the waiting hall.  His large eyes glared from his bulbous head upon something new.  Taller than an Aron Ve'ja it stood though thin and stooped down near eye to eye with Cobius.  It clutched a shawl, palid as dead flesh decaying from a wound, spidering blue veins awash under the skin.  Silks wound tight over much of its flesh, as if spun about not woven and worn.  What of the creature shown threw as coal dark or blotches of healthy pink flesh.  Lips and flesh did not seem to product about its mouth, just wild grinning and chattering teeth.  Though the eyes; the eyes had been cast over in skin. It's hunch was aided by a staff on which some strange homunculus of eyes perched; long tendrils merged staff and beast. To this Cobius Baco Gervis faultered in trying to speak.

Cobius knew of the breading of living tools, it was the Beltinovites that first took up the art, but this.  This was beyond even his dreaming.  He would dwell a moment on the blood coursing within it's shawl; finally drawn from amazement by the blinking of several eyes upon the staff.  "Seek you no evil here Monstrosity, magics here could turn blood to wood dust and flesh to straw. I have no understanding of you, and I wish it!" Cobius cast from a voice that echoed with a chorus of minds not his only his own.  Cobius had little idea what the being conveyed but would guess amusement.

A chattering rasp came forth both growling and whining. "I only seek the location of Hesod's Grace Hold, a prison in the latter years, you will have maps..Yes?"  "I believe though it will take time and transcription more.  Barctia Oil will eat of the sand plates to create a reverse image which you may take in a days time." "We shall come again next day." hissed out the beast, which lurched to its full height and left.  This was to Cobius' relief though he was nagged by the thoughts that it would return and the unanswered question "What was it."

The next morning he camped in the waiting hall, transcription bound safely.  Hours passed singularly, until as a spectral creeping shadow it returned.  Drawing the plate back into his arms he bartered "Of what races are you, who burdened you with these abominations of flesh." There was no answer for enough time that Cobius realized there would be none.  He finally passed the plate to the beast.  I turned leaving only with "We are the Hesodicur."

Game Master Advice letting people know game themes

What is it with GM's that we get so set on shit?  There are at least two campaigns that I have had just about enough with.  Those being wandering about with your dick in your hand and sailing about with your dick in your hand.  My god how many of these fucking things do we have to play through.  I get it mister game controller dude you want to go somewhere.  Fuck get in the car and go that is what i do.  If I wanted to sail I would figure that shit out and find a way to be apart of it.  The same could be said about sword play and shooting which i enjoy both of, but not the consequences of doing it to a person.

To digress a bit if you really are into something you should make it your hobby.  I am into writing for example.  I have a thesaurus, dictionary and one of those clicky ass IBM keyboards.  I am living the dream baby.  I think of something and just type they shit up right quick.  If you are all into something try and make time for it and do it.  If you have a family try to include them in it but do it.  Go bowling, chop wood, go to highway 5 rest stops looking for anon hook ups with truckers.

The point for role playing being, don't do a theme campaign without letting people know when they sign up.  If I was going to run a thieving city based game I would let people know all about it.  They could set up their character with that in mind.  That ties them into the campaign and gives them something interesting they can do in the vast majority of play.

Say we are sailing around, you could create a sea witch or even just load some wind spells on your wizard.  That will make you much more useful and safer than the fireball throwing battle mage.  Maybe a pirate build rather than a rogue.  All this makes for a party that is part of the game rather than one along for the ride.

There are some themes people are just not interested.  I am not interested on being on a boat anymore.  but if you let me do something like a semi aquatic character hey I may just be interested in playing.  Take Anthropomorphic animal, please! Seriously I just can't go there. I you take my meaning let people know generally so they can decide if it is not their cup of tea.  If they are out they may be back in the next game.  If they are in and unhappy no one really wins.

Gamers Clique

I recently found a new video game store down the street from my house called Gamers Clique.  I have to say these guys are pretty cool and I want you to check them out.  They are new so they don't have the biggest stock like 4 Jays up in Pinole, but they are worth a look.  The guys running the store know their shit unlike a lot of places and the prices are very fair.  I have purchased from another local store Game World and felt like I could have done better on eBay.

The big reason I am writing about them is they actually do some repair and evaluation of the games.  This is huge to me as I have purchase some bad games from Space Cat in the past.  They do clean up of all the contacts on their Carts and actually do some fixing of disks.  I am not sure of that process they had a little machine.  What I am really stoked about is they do replacement of the 72 pin connector for your NES.  There is no place that does that here.  I didn't ask about composite video conversion for Atari systems, but that would more than I could imagine.

Here is a their location in the shopping center on Santa Teresa and Blossom hill.  I want to make it easy for you to get there.  Good people who know their product and do repair, they have really won me over.  I hope they do you too.

Cross platform list of Imagic cartridges

Ok I guess some people were looking for this sort of list so i cooked up a quick little one for Imagic.  These guys were sort of the number 3 producer for Atari.  These guys frustrated me back in the day, because they had some titles that were only on the Intellivision.   I always wanted to give Ice Trek a try

You will see they produced products for less consoles than Activision; dying and having their products absorbed by other producers.  I always liked Demon Attack and Dragon fire is great.  I was actually a member of their Numb Thumb Club back in the day, though they spelled my name Vim Ricky.  Riddle of the sphinx was something that looked very cool on the box but didn't play so well.     As you can see their boxes were a little goofy.

Activision Cartridge List for multiple platforms including atari, nes, sega and early computers

I worked this up mainly for myself, but you are welcome to it.  As I have said of my Atari collecting I focus a bit on early Activision.  For the time those were really stand out games.  I would say for the 2600 you can't beat Activision, and having played many of those games I am also interested in their ports to other systems.  One of the systems adds ground tanks to River Raid which is pretty neat.  I also lived not far from the Activision office out in Milpitas so I sort of think of them as my local game outfit.

I am a cart focused collector and avoid any sort of floppy or CD collecting.  The list you will see is only for carts, even when talking about the Atari XE and Commodore 64.

Four Cameos a poem inspired by Scott Walkers writing process

Ok I don't know about this, I am trying a bit different writing process.   I am trying to work around the time based nature of reading.  In film and writing you don't every apprehend all at once, as you do in art.  I want to do something where you get a picture all at once.  My thought was the "Cameo" of repeated words in the blocks of text.

Some of this comes from my no understanding Scott Walkers approach to lyrics.  He uses blocks of words and then assembles them.  I don't get that!  I sort of think of it as saying well i will need these few elements to say what I am going to need to say.  Then Abstractly writing on those topics.  Then taking those fragments to make a whole.

Here I did not do that correctly I took my four theme cameos and wrote them.  It was basically linear which was not what I was going for but it was a start.

Daylight comes early
daylight breaks fate
None hidden in daylight
Come daylight I await
Reds arise through you
daylight. Color. Hate.

You end with Harvest
dear reaped little seed.
Harvest took all need
souls aligned in harvest.
With winter's stealing
Greed. Offer up harvest.

We're only sacrifice
against your lost sacred.
Sacrificed blood spilled
for sacrificed dreams.
A lamb led to slaughter
for Sacred halal frith.

Silent our decay
in fields left to rot.
the once bountiful
harvest, decays waste.
Found a sacred morning
Daylights mortal decay.

Casting thoughts for Season 3 of A game of thrones ( A storm of swords)

Philip Glenister
Having written a bit on A song of Ice and fire, and needing a topic to write on.  Here are some thoughts on casting for a Storm of Swords.  Some are actors I like and would just like to see in the series, but are appropriate for the part.

Phillip Glenister:  I originally thought he should be Davos but with that role filled I think he would also make a solid Mance Rayder.  He was fantastic as Gene Hunt and I think that role is near enough to make him a solid Mance.  He has the right air of bad ass for a cause, just not your cause.

Vladimir Kulich:  I would love to see this guy as Tormund Giantsbane.  He is the actor from The 13th Warrior.  He is 6'4 at least and would certainly make a solid Tormund.

Christopher Eccleston: would be great in the role of Qyburn.  In both Dr. Who and Heroes he brought something a little sinister.  In Dr. Who it reminded me of the little dark turns Tom Baker would sometimes do, I loved it.  I would love to see him as the mad scientist ex maester.

Bruce Dickinson: Yep Iron Maiden's singer.  I would like to see him in on of the bard roles, probably Tom Seven Strings.  But even one of the singers from Joffery's wedding feast would be nice.  Perhaps Fish could have the role of Marillion.

Viggo Mortenson:  I would really love to see Viggo as a cameo.  It would be a funny contrast to have video in a small evil role so I was thinking Axell Florent.  It wouldn't be a big commitment for Viggo and would be fun for fans.

A story of dialysis, gencon and gary gygax's dice part 7

For us this was joy, Brian excluded.  Derek and I loved these games, loved the dark and sound.  Even the art and Marque titles were well loved friends. Our Third, Brian, milled around the pinball play area looking forlorn.  We were sorry , to a small degree, but too excited to worry.

Black Tiger and Rastan fought with us and Spy hunter speed and swam.  Moon Patrol moved forward with every quarters, much to Billy Mitchell's chagrin.  Derek and I tried for fastest completion on Cadash but I lost interest when Star Castles powered to life.  This was my game, my childhood my first love.  The game I rode my bike across town for, collected pennies for.  Really I don't know how long I played but my back hurt when I heard the Derek begin to yell.

Off in a corner a Chapman stick player had been tapping out the themes to several video games.  Apparently Derek insisted on accompanying him but often changed the tune to something off Celtic frost's tragic serenades. Then Brian swung wild with an air hockey paddle and the puck exploded into flight. Clattering off the back glass players ducked in fright.  Arising in anger and scanning for the source, they found Brian smiling at the table still playing though the puck was gone. The fight that erupted almost made perfect since framed like this.  The battle itself made none, one armed with a guitar and the other running underfoot.  A high score holder when down when the guitar bludgeoned him with that twang. I hurried the pair out as quickly as I could.  This wasn't the first time this had happened.

A story of dialysis, gencon and gary gygax's dice part 6

Out of Omaha we turned to Ottumwa and Twin Galaxies.  The village of Ottumwa a tiny place where once quarters reigned supreme.  This was the hometown of the arcade in it's powered down glory.  But for a day or two it flicked with life and the siren's song of attract mode was again heard.

Lone collectors and garage game owners converging here to remake the arcades of old.  Everyone with a machine from four states over was came.  Trailers and trucks packed up with games crept the back roads that ran to Ottumwa.  All hoping to add their notes to the cacophony that was only conjured in the arcade.  Separate they were games with songs and sounds; together they sung discord.  Muffled and tame to closed doors; opened on the fullness of sound.  Then joy, a smile; a best friend too long forgot!  Ozone and too much electricity running in the air.

Heavy Metal and Hard Rock references in Dungeons and Dragons Online

Being a fan of both Dungeon and Dragons online and Heavy metal, I have noticed a few in jokes that are part of the game.  I wanted to present a few for players not so fond of metal.  If you know of any others references please let me know.  jameslrickel@gmail.com

Rainbow in the dark: Well this is a reference to the Dio song of the same name.

Trial by Fire: Is a reference to the Testament song off The New Order

King Bendix: The end boss in a Cabal for One comes from Kim Bendix Peterson otherwise known as King Diamond.

Edward the Flesh golem: from Fleshmakers Lab is a reference to Eddie of Iron Maiden.

Elyd's Edge: has a Rush quote in the description of the item.

In the flesh: Is a reference to a Pink Floyd Song.

Running with the Devils: Comes from a Van Halen song

Schenker: The rare scorpion king in Ataraxia's is named after the guitarist of the Scorpions.

Fear Factory: This is the name of an industrial metal band, I saw them in Sac in July (HELL).

Grab the air fleeting child,

Watch for the morning
with long held breath.

There begins summer
just past nearest rise.
Coming for you
Can not cancel it. It's too Late!

Meet it with wisdom;
well prepared for their lies.
They will make you want
what they want you to want.
Til your tied down
and in gossamer caught.

Vain in beauty
feeble in thought,
bare your teeth.

Science fiction double feature

I watched a documentary called American Scary over the weekend.  I really enjoyed it and thing you should give it a look.  It's about TV Horror Hosts in America and the creature features they presented.  This was an important part of the television landscape that had basically vanished. I enjoyed it for two delightful little thoughts I was left musing after the movie finished.  Those being locality with regard to the Internet and the introduction of lexicon.

I want to first talk about the introduction of lexicon.  I am using that term for something far larger; the introduction to the hidden world of a new subject.  It ties in a bit with my post on John Water's and is introduction to underground cinema; in that he gave me new keywords for my lexicon.  Basically allowing me to investigate the worlds hidden within those words.

There is immense power in the teacher of hidden knowledge.  In American Scary they often used the term Shaman.  I don't like the mystical tone this gives, but it is correct.  There are certain subjects, especially those falling in fandom, that are outside of popular grasp.  You need a weird uncle or older friend to guide you, the hosts of these shows were every ones weird uncle.  If I can give some personal example, an acquaintance brought his daughter to a party we were at.  She mentioned being into anime but only knowing a few shows.  Several older guests were geeks and talked at length about shows like Star Blazers and Battle of the Planets.  Having blundered into the subject via friends at school she lacked the history of the subject and missed the lexicon.  This guide is also familiar to any fan of heavy metal, though often its is just someone who gives you a gentle push.  Often just a long haired guy at the record store who encourages you to buy Sabbath instead.

These hosts or guides are really something we now lack and need.  As information expands and become ubiquitous inroads to subjects become more difficult.  With the expansion of storage space both physical and within the cloud and on demand sources becoming the norm people really don't know what to demand.  The host who guides the initiate becomes even more important, taking the viewer on a journey through the subject.

One aspect of these hosts that made them unique was their locality.  These were not some national personality talking of comicon in San Diego but rather a local voice mentioning Westercon in the next big city.  I really is of little use to say Gencon is the best convention of Dungeons and Dragons there is; as a kid even a hundred miles is as far as Europe.  Telling someone the name and address of their friendly local gaming store is a help. In American Scary they talk about the power of showing a kids picture on TV, the joy it brings.  This close connection to audience only comes with locality.  we have some tools for geotargetting of content on the Internet already.  Most of these revolve around targeting of ads but the technology is certainly there.

Taking these thoughts of locality and lexicon into mind I will end this with a thought. Our content providers should open themselves up to addition connect and the control of their own content.  This would allow for an interested party to create a host person and take the user through the monolith of content that exists as on demand.  Concerned persons could adopt a persona and present shows with garage level production values that very much approach the quality of early Horror Hosts. It should be local as that has value.  Perhaps it even exists already, let me know.

Three faces of the Chaotic Neutral alignment and representative characters from A Song of Ice and Fire

Many dungeon masters will tell you the alignment they hate is chaotic neutral.  This is often because it is selected to allow complete freedom of action by the player.  This creates a character that can do as he pleases and the alignment system ,which is in some ways meant as a restriction of action, is eliminated. For the person running the game this is sort of bullshit.

To get away from the do what you want sort of thing.  I wanted to talk a little bit about three flavors of the alignment you often see in literature, more specifically A song of Ice and fire.

The Liberator:  In this case you have a character that is actively working against some evil of oppression, in many cases slavery. Here you have a character with a clear opposition to something bigger than himself.  He is often working to root our slavery or injustice where he sees it.  This is perhaps the version that is nearest to Chaotic Good.  A big difference is the Chaotic Neutral character is less a freedom fighter and more someone who reacts to oppression when he sees it.  He may have a campaign against slavery but does not care for the people he has freed.  In A Game of Thrones Daenerys Targaryen.

The Free Agent: This character is out for himself.  This can be a mercenary that changes sides based on the highest bidder or a warrior who abandons a lord when the battle goes against they.  They are not a coward they are often just not concerned with anyone else and wont be bothered by others suffering.  This would certainly be The Hound Sandor Clegane in A song of Ice and Fire.

The Loon:  There are some characters that are just crazy.  These character are loose cannons who perhaps view themselves as doing the right thing.  These are often the most fun characters to have in the group as they often ruin every ones well laid plans.  They will also ruin the Game Masters plans as they often will left when the games goes right, dragging the entire party with them.  They are often not leaders but create a huge shift that completely redirects the storyline.  In combat they are usually the most heroic character around, actively seeking deadly situations.  In a game of thrones the resident Loon is Lyssa Aryn

A story of dialysis, gencon and gary gygax's dice part 5

Brian was a noted card cheat as well; offering junk Magic card trades.  He returned to Derek and I, with well over two hundred dollars of card value in profit.  His gains would become more liquid at the convention, but now the cards wouldn't fill the tank.  My credit card continued to run up with both gas and food.  The pair free to use my card at gas stations, but I was needed to sign for food.  Cashiers would gape at me, when they helped me to pay.  My skin was a little grey at this time and I was sunken; somehow walking a line of gaunt and morbidly obese all at once.

I was driving with a handicapped plate which helped a bit with parking.  I was being given Femocrite but still I was struggling with my breath across the mountains. Even in Indianapolis the elevation was a struggle, compared to home.  San Jose was sea level, it was easier to breath with the anemic blood you were left with after a run.  Walking was a chore for me, I needed a breather after walking around the grocery store those days.

A story of dialysis, gencon and gary gygax's dice part 4

The run went well, this time, limited weakness and I wasn't so worn out.  After my companions showed I drove a few hours before falling into the exhaustion of post dialysis.  Derek would drive when it wasn't me.  Neither of us trusted Brian's driving.  Guard rails and pylons often animated and attacked the cars he piloted.  Collapsed in the back I would wake to be the night driver.

Driving would be hard, we had two days to be in Omaha.  The drive to Reno was short, due to them having an open chair for me.  Only Salt Lake and Omaha had openings that fit me in.  I had been on the phone with probably fifty units setting up this trip. Getting units lined up and along with back up and emergency units warned that I would be traveling.  If you ever played that don't step on lava game, that is sort of like dialysis travel. You are safe in the unit but the second you get out the timer starts to get to the next.

Omaha wasn't bad though we hoped to visit Marlin Perkins who had apparently died over a decade past.  Brian found his way to the local gaming parlor during my run.  I returned to find he had turtled his imperial guard to a win in the evenings Warhammer tournament.

I recently watched "This Filthy World" by John Water's or at least bits of it.   I don't know why but I sort of like Waters, he knows his stuff.  I learned the keywords to look up for a whole world of alternative cinema.  I am speaking specifically of Four Walling and Road Show Cinema distribution.  It reminded me a bit of the William Castle inspired Matinee.  I think Hollywood should give this sort of thing a try again, if they are going to ever get a fresh idea.  We saw something similar with the original Paranormal Activity of late.

What I am proposing is a challenge of sorts.

1. Make a movie and Roadshow it.  You are free to get it into theaters if you like.  You are also allowed to four wall should you wish.  You can even go with a no wall distribution tour of back yards with a sheet and a projector.

2. Add content with each screening day.  Create new content for the roadshow with each day of screening.  This comes from John Waters thought exercise of filming a movie and having it in the theater that night.  I don't think it must be a movie but a short subject could be possible.  If taking William Castle as the example you could go with alternate in theater gimmicks ala percepto.

3. Document Screenings.  Get some sort of friend or production assistant to do documentation of the screenings.  Post online for others to see.

4. Make a Profit.  If you can make .01 of profit you are eligible. This will encourage Kroger Babb and Castle type antics to get people to actually see it.  Go on the radio.  Canvas the area in a car telling people the movie is coming.

5. (optional) Plan a stop in San Jose, California.  That way I can come and see.

A story of dialysis, gencon and gary gygax's dice part 3

Reno was our first stop, not to gamble but there was need.  Americas biggest little city had a dialysis unit; which I needed.  Being Large my run would be five hours with little fishing for my vein. I hoped Brian and Derek wouldn't find any trouble.

Dialysis is a pretty much the same everywhere you go.  Weigh in, to see how much fluid they need to take off.  Wait for your chair to be vacated and lines replaced.  Sit and the tech feels for your vein.  They wipe you down with some brown goo that is a bit stronger than Alcohol.  Next you are injected with Lidocane for the pain, it burns too so what the fuck.  Finally they get the big needles in you. Those lines I mentioned before feed through something like a pool filter and back through a pump; which returns your blood to you.  Your circulatory system pumps a fair amount out, then the return motor gets switched on.  A lot of your blood is outside of your body at this point , so you get cold.  Aiding the blood flow they add a blood thinner called Porcine into the mix; you taste spam when they first shoot it into the line.  This isn't pleasant, I guess they have a cow option for Muslims called Bovine.  Then you fucking sit there.

They usually have television the good units let you control the channel.  The bad units play from a central VCR.  I once sat through a Danny De La Paz film festival.  Most sleep, I never could with the constant blood pressure readings.  You were allowed visits but none long enough for a D&D game.  My wife would bring me doughnuts and wait for me early one.  It was hard on her, really it was too hard.  I eventually asked her not to come; I couldn't take what I was doing to her.  In reality she was still crying just at home instead of in the waiting room.

A story of dialysis, gencon and gary gygax's dice part 2

We headed east creeping our way through the land. Over the great mountains ever toward Indianapolis, which had long called us like a beacon.  This the dreamed journey of boyhood, with caution and savings thrown to the wind. Death and reading far too much of the German Idealists often renders experience in higher regard than money. Also I was being a selfish dick, what would my wife have after all this. But she encourage me, as a way of loving me, and I rationalized finally deciding to go.

I don't want to be mysterious so let me explain.  You are perhaps a normal person, dear reader.  Raised well and didn't fall outside of society or through the cracks.  But for some of us though, life throws a curve, and we ended up playing dungeons and dragons. In the darkness of a garage or basement we gathered, with foolish jokes and others like ourselves.  We are nerds! If you can imagine use all getting together for a few days, all in costume with our dice and books.  The horror that came to mind is called Gencon and is far realer than you would have hoped.  It was our destination, a Mecca for three broken souls.
